VW to produce first pick-up in Argentina
(chinatrucks.com, Dec.29, 2009)German carmaker Volkswagen said it would build its first pick-up trucks in Argentina recently.
The Amarok is the first pick-up developed by the German company's engineers. It is to be produced in the Pacheco factory near Buenos Aires with 80 per cent of the 90,000 planned vehicles marked for export.
'If VW wants to be number one worldwide in automobile production, it must be represented in all market segments,' said Viktor Klima, the chief executive of VW Argentina and a former Austrian chancellor.
Argentinian President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner said the announcement demonstrated confidence in the country and was the first vehicle to be produced in Argentina to be exported worldwide. The production represents a 428-million-dollar investment that will create about 10,000 jobs, Klima said.
The Amarok, which means wolf in the Inuit language, is to debut on the South American market in early 2010 and in Europe in the summer. It will also be sold in Russia, Africa and Australia.
