www.chinatrucks.com: Patented particulate matter sensor monitors the performance of diesel particulate filters
Delphi’s ammonia sensor is the first technology that allows direct measurement of ammonia on-board a vehicle.
Delphi Automotive (NYSE: DLPH) will showcase its diesel exhaust emissions sensors, which help vehicle makers comply with Euro VI and other demanding worldwide emissions standards, during the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show.
The exhaust emissions sensor portfolio includes Delphi’s ammonia sensor and particulate matter (PM) sensor, both designed to improve emissions monitoring in light-, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles.
Particulate Matter Sensor
Delphi’s particulate matter (PM) sensor monitors the performance of diesel particulate filters, helping OEMs comply with increasingly rigorous standards for on-board diagnostics (OBD) associated with newer emissions regulations. The new PM sensor combines fast response and high sensitivity with low complexity and simple, self-diagnostic capabilities.
The patented sensor will detect failures of the diesel particulate filter (DPF), as mandated by OBD legislation.
Particulate matter, or soot, created during the combustion process is treated in the exhaust system by the DPF to keep tailpipe emissions below legislated levels. Stricter diagnostic regulations will require diagnosing DPF failures to more stringent threshold levels. Delphi’s new sensor uses resistive technology to measure levels of soot in the exhaust stream after the DPF, allowing an OBD alarm to be raised when a predetermined threshold is exceeded. Fast response and high sensitivity, along with simple sensor self-diagnostics techniques make the sensor desirable for both light-duty and heavy-duty applications.
Ammonia Sensor
Delphi’s ammonia sensor is the first technology that allows direct measurement of ammonia on-board a vehicle.
As selective catalytic reduction (SCR) becomes an increasingly popular aftertreatment option to reduce diesel NOx emissions, the need for precise control of urea dosing is expected to increase rapidly. Delphi’s ammonia sensor is the first technology that allows direct ammonia measurement in the exhaust for closed-loop control of the SCR process, permitting the amount of urea injected into the exhaust stream to be optimized and providing OBD information for the SCR system.
The ammonia sensor helps the SCR system work at greater NOx conversion efficiencies, allowing the vehicle meet new tailpipe NOx standards and enabling improved fuel efficiency. It also gives manufacturers the flexibility to optimize the size of the SCR catalyst and potentially reduce or eliminate a post-oxidation catalyst that otherwise would be needed to remove ammonia slip from the exhaust.
