Delphi Wireless Device Charging to Make Driving Easier for Truckers
Date:2012-10-12 Author:Mika Source:www.chinatrucks.com
www.chinatrucks.com: Delphi Automotive (NYSE: DLPH) will display its Wireless Device Charging System at the upcoming IAA Commercial Vehicles show. Currently under development, the system transmits power to devices within range of a power source to deliver a charge without precise positioning of the electronic device receiving the charge. It would eliminate the clutter, inconvenience and distractions associated with multiple charging cords in the commercial vehicle cabin and replace them with a safe, convenient and efficient automatic charging system.
“Commercial vehicles rely on a number of mobile devices such as phones and laptops to communicate between drivers and to manage fleets, as well as to entertain, inform and keep drivers safe on their journey,” said Markus Kerkhoff, engineering director, Delphi Connection Systems, Europe. “Delphi Wireless Device Charging will create a cordless environment for these critical communication and logistic needs by using hidden power source resonators for high-efficiency, hands-free charging.”
Revolutionary Design
Delphi is evaluating the system on research vehicles and expects to be production-ready by model year 2015. The Delphi Wireless Device Charging System makes use of the same magnetic resonance technology as the Delphi Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging System. Magnetic resonance technology is superior to traditional tightly coupled inductive charging because it can transmit power over greater distances, does not require precise device positioning in order to deliver a charge and will be able to charge multiple devices at the same time. The mobile devices simply need to be in proximity to the power source, notdirectly touching it. Traditional tightly coupled inductive charging systems are limited to charging only one device per charging coil and the device must be resting on top of the pad to receive a charge.
Safe & Convenient
Freeing drivers from charging cords is not only convenient, it will help create a safer driving experience. The Delphi Wireless Device Charging System is being engineered with drivers and vehicle manufacturers in mind, and will provide a competitive advantage to OEMs who choose to offer it as an option on their future vehicles. The enhanced consumer experience and additional interior styling opportunities provided by Delphi’s magnetic resonance technology will give OEMs the ability to differentiate their future vehicles.
Delphi has a full portfolio of plug-in and wireless charging systems for electric vehicles. A complete line of data connectivity products including cables, connectors and consumer ports help deliver high power safely and keep drivers and passengers connected with high-speed data in a high-speed world.
