VOLVO Tech Show 2011, Higher Efficiency Lower Consumption
On May 24-25, Volvo Group arranges its fifth Tech Show at the Volvo Demo Center in Gothenburg, Sweden. It is an exhibition where over a hundred development groups from all companies and markets within the Volvo Group present their most innovative development projects- some of which are still more than 10 years from commercialized.

High efficient transportation is vital to economy development, environmental protection and social progress. VOLVO showed new strong-power trucks during the tech show. As our journalist observed, bigger loading capacity is an effective way to raise transportation efficiency, and one VOLVO truck can pull two trailers.

As introduced by Peter Karlsten, Chief Technology Officer, Volvo Group, and Chairman, GIB Technology, explained that Volvo parallel hybrid is called I-SAM, and fuel efficiency on sanitation truck can be reduced by 25%-35% if applied. Volvo released the first hybrid heavy truck on March 2006. Volvo Group showed their 4th generation hybrid solution in 2008, and buses, trucks and construction with such equipment can save 30% fuel consumption. Volvo FE Hybrid started to be sold in batches in March this year.

Alternate energy source will be widely used in the future. Volvo has developed seven alternate energy sources to be used on commercial vehicles, namely biodiesel, methanol/alcohol, biogas, combining diesel, DME, hydrogen biogas, biogas+biodiesel. They deem that DME is a high-efficient reproducible alternate energy source. The energy only emits a little vapor, and its CO2 emission will be zero if produced from plant materials. DME is a rather simple chemical product compared with biogas with less production costs. Senior vice president of public and environmental affairs said that DME has wider markets in China, and they are expecting to enter this market. Volvo group has applied natural gas on buses and coaches since mid-1990, and their new natural gas engine gas reached Euro 5 and EEV directive standards.
